Roman Macaya is scientist who has developed a multidisciplinary career as a biomedical scientist, businessman, diplomat, and public servant. Roman currently serves as CEO of RIMAC, S.A., a regional crop-protection company based in Costa Rica.
He is also an Instructor in the Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Roman previously served as Executive President and Chairman of the Board of the CajaCostarricense de Seguro Social, the institution that provides all public health care services in Costa Rica. He led the country´s health care response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to this, Roman served as Costa Rica´s Ambassador to the United States, where he emphasized science diplomacy as one of the principal agendas of the embassy.
Roman has held leadership roles in the fields of biomedical and clinical research, private equity, health care, and agribusiness. He currently serves in advisory and executive roles in health care initiatives and the agribusiness sector.
Roman holds an MBA in Health Care Management from the University of Pennsylvania, a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UCLA, and a B.A. in Chemistry from Middlebury College.
